Web Hosts -- How to find the RIGHT one.

When researching VPS hosts, we used several items to narrow down the host selection process. We recommend that everyone do the same.

When reviewing a VPS/Dedicated hosting company do the following:

Ignore about 80% of the reviews you find online -- You'll find that a large part of the negative reviews are generated by 20% of individuals that do not have a clue about web hosting and expect the the un-expectible. (I'm always more interested in how the hosting company responds to complaints in forums like: Web Hosting Talk

Review the hosts web page carefully. READ their "TERMS OF SERVICE" closely, because if there is a gotcha, it will be in that document.

A good web host will always have an "About Us" and "Contact us" page. On those pages, look for the following information:

  • A physical mailing address.
  • Datacenter Location(s) -- Not just generic pictures of a datacenter.
  • Contact phone numbers.
  • BBB listing -- if there is no link, manually search for them at the BBB.
  • Clear concise documentation on what services they will and will not provide.
  • Hidden charges will often be in the "TOS" page.

    • Look the host up at: Web-Hosting-Top. They have excellent history, reviews and data on all of the hosting companies.

    The hosts I immediately put into the DO NOT use bin met one or more of the following:

  • No physical mailing address.
  • No information of the location of their datacenter(s).
  • Vague language in their TOS.
  • No contact phone information.
  • No About Us page or one that simply said nothing but generic mumbo jumbo statements.
  • No listing with the Better Business Bureau or a poor rating.
  • To many "Unlimited" claims on their plans.
